Read like a writer this summer—and maybe win a spot in one of my courses!

A free reading challenge designed to help you notice the craft behind great writing. As you read, you’ll mark off squares on the bingo card whenever you encounter storytelling elements that move you: a vivid setting, unforgettable voice, striking line, or even a powerful pause.

It’s not about speeding through books or checking off goals. It’s about slowing down, noticing what makes writing work, and letting it inspire your own.

Summer Reading Bingo

💡 How It Works

  • Download the bingo card and guide
  • Read all summer long and mark off squares as you notice specific craft elements in the books you’re reading
  • Reflect on your discoveries in a journal (optional, but highly encouraged!)
  • Complete a row, column, or diagonal by September 14, 2025, to enter for a chance to win a spot in one of my future courses

This challenge is open to everyone—writers, readers, or the curious in-between. And if you’re part of my course community (past, present, or future!), you’re also warmly invited to join our #BookClub chat on Slack where we’ll swap quotes, share aha moments, and cheer each other on.

🔍 A Few Things to Notice on the Bingo Card

Here’s a sneak peek at some of the elements you’ll look out for:

  • A voice that feels unmistakably itself
Think of a narrator whose tone is so specific, that you’d recognize it in a single sentence.
  • A setting that feels alive
Places that leap off the page—you can smell sea air, or hear a drone overhead.
  • Moments of silence or ellipsis
When what’s unsaid holds more power than what’s on the page.
  • A line that stops you mid-page
The kind you underline or whisper aloud because it’s just that good.

You’ll find many more craft elements on the card, plus a guide to help you reflect more deeply.

🖋️ Beautiful Journal Spreads by Julia Garza

To spark your creativity, I invited the incredible Julia Garza of The Workbooks on Substack to design some custom journal spreads just for this challenge. They’re full of inspiration—and an invitation to make this challenge your own.

Whether you sketch, collage, scribble, or list—it’s all welcome. There’s no one “right” way to reflect on your reading. The point is to savour the process in a way that’s true to you.

💬 Join the Community Conversation

If you’re in my course community—whether you’re a current member, an alum, or already signed up for my summer offerings—you’re welcome in our #BookClub Slack channel. We’ll be reading, chatting, and celebrating small discoveries all season long.

And if you’re not part of the community yet, this is a wonderful way to connect. Complete your bingo row by the deadline, and you might win a spot in one of my future writing courses!
