Hi, I'm rachel Thompson

You know me from your past course experience, but as a reminder: I am a literary magazine editor (with Room), a published author, and the host of the Write, Publish, and Shine Podcast.

I am here to help you write and publish your most luminous work.

What Writers Say About My Approach to Peer Workshop

Lacey Yong

“The community is full of supportive people who care about writing and who care about other people’s writing. Rachel’s kind and wise instruction and the beautiful group of writers she attracts will keep you going.”

Lacey Yong is smiling in front of a window, wearing a red and blue Madarin-collared shirt and her hair is black and pulled behind her head.
A smiling person with shoulder-length silver-gray hair sits on what appears to be a covered porch or deck. They are wearing sunglasses pushed up on their head and a patterned sleeveless top. Behind them, wooden railings and cabin-style buildings are visible with mountain scenery in the background.

Kimberly Peterson

“I like that our community has such a variety of life experiences. I find that connection with everybody doing their own thing, finding their own path, but supporting one another very powerful. I know there’s room for my voice because there are so many variations.”

Lori Sebastianutti

“I get excited to check in and share happiness, frustrations, and suggestions with other writers.”

Here are Some Frequently Asked Questions About the Course…

Will you be reading or giving feedback during the live workshops?

I facilitate the sessions to create a smooth, respectful, and encouraging environment, but all feedback during live workshops comes exclusively from the other luminous, supportive writers in our community. These are thoughtful, generous peers who help each other grow through kind and constructive feedback.

How can I get personalized feedback from you?

Choose the optional add-on (included in all registrations in August) to submit up to two pieces from the workshop for personalized manuscript reviews, receiving my warm, thoughtful feedback tailored specifically to your unique voice and goals. I’ll provide detailed insights that not only strengthen your current work but also deepen your understanding of your own style, giving you valuable tools for all your future projects.

What types of writing can I submit to the workshop?

We welcome a diverse range of creative work, including:

  • Hybrid writing
Experimental pieces that blend genres, combine prose and poetry, include visual-textual elements, or use other innovative approaches that don’t fit traditional categories
  • Poetry packets
Collections of poems that work together thematically, formally, or as part of a larger project, including individual poems or a linked series.
  • Flash fiction series
Connected short-short stories, prose poems, or other brief narrative forms that gain power through their relationship to each other
  • Creative prose
Fiction, creative nonfiction, essays, and other narrative work

Word count limit:

While submissions typically run up to 6,000 words, we don’t enforce strict word counts. Instead, we focus on providing the quality of feedback that best serves your work.

We tailor our feedback approach based on your submission:

  • Longer submissions receive broader, developmental feedback focusing on overall structure, concept, voice, and larger craft elements
  • Shorter works receive more detailed, granular feedback examining line-level craft, word choice, form, and technical execution

When deciding to submit:

Consider what kind of feedback would be most valuable for your current project. Are you looking for big-picture guidance on a longer work in progress, or detailed craft feedback on shorter, more polished pieces? Your goals should guide both what you submit and what you communicate about your feedback preferences.

How large are the peer groups?

Each workshop group includes four writers, including you, to create an intimate and supportive space for sharing and growth.

How much does the workshop cost?

The regular price of the workshop is $249 USD with two optional manuscript reviews  available to add-on for $100.

I also offer sliding scale pricing options:

  • 15% off for writers recently unemployed or experiencing reduced income, without access to generational or personal wealth
  • 25% off for writers facing financial insecurity, without access to personal or generational wealth and/or savings
  • 30% off for BIPOC writers, Trans writers, or writers on disability payments

Are payment plans available?

Yes! Payment plans for the workshop and manuscript reviews are offered over five months. See above for pricing details.
